"Spectacular News!"

Wednesday, June 15th was the day we had been anxiously waiting for regarding Caleb's eye procedure to determine whether the chemo was doing its job or not. If it was effective, the hope and prayer was that Dr. Weiss would be able to laser or freeze them off then and there. Dave and I went to Children's Hospital with Kyle, Melissa, and Caleb. Kyle and Melissa were given a pager and told that if they got a call in about an hour, they likely weren't able to do anything and if it was closer to an hour and a half, they would be lasering or freezing them.

As Caleb was taken for his procedure about 12:45, the four of us went up to the cafeteria for lunch. You could sense that we were all tense and nervous. At about 1:45, an hour after Caleb had been taken back, the pager beeped loud and clear. To say our hearts and stomachs dropped was an understatement. We quietly left the cafeteria, fearful, yet possibly optimistic, about what news was going to be delivered. Kyle and Melissa went to a little room to meet with Dr. Weiss. They said it felt like forever before he arrived, although it was really only minutes. As he came in slowly, they got more nervous, but then he broke into a smile and said, "Spectacular News!" He was able to freeze the tumors and the cancer cells were dead. He said it was one of the most drastic results he'd seen and he's chief of the opthamology dept.! When Kyle and Melissa came out of the room, they were both sobbing with happiness. We all embraced, cried, and thanked the Lord that He answered our prayers in the affirmative! They still were going ahead with the original plan of doing Caleb's 3rd and 4th rounds of chemo (done on Thursday and Friday followed by a round next month). There are a few pieces of the tumor left that were unable to be frozen off, but the doctors are hopeful these next two rounds of chemo will take care of those. We know the Lord is the Great Physician and it was His hands that were guiding the surgeon's hands. We continue to pray that the chemo treatments will finalize this and Caleb will be completely cancer-free!

Watching Kyle and Melissa these past two months has been a study of two young people who have handled this situation with grace and faith. They have been rocks and pillars and have never complained, but have taken such wonderful care of their little guy. Melissa has kept a blog about their journey via CaringBridge.org.

First picture is of Caleb in the waiting room just prior to his procedure and the second picture is after his procedure in the recovery room.
