Welcome to the World, Caleb Evan Hancock!!

Our long-awaited Caleb decided he wanted a unique birthday, thus his appearance on 1-11-11!!

Melissa called me Monday afternoon after midwife/ultrasound appointments and asked if I was ready to be a grandma. Her midwife said she was a prime candidate to be induced, so sent her to the hospital. Bonnie took my class for about 25 minutes at the end of the day so I could skeedaddle to the hospital!

They started the pitocin about 7:15 p.m. and Melissa was doing very well, handling her contractions nicely. A few hours later, with increased pitocin, the contractions started becoming more intense. She was able to get an epidural after 1:00 a.m. The Hancocks and I waited in the waiting room throughout the night with periodic checks to see how things were going. Shortly after 6:00 a.m., Kyle came out and said Melissa was at 10 cm and was ready to deliver! Gayle and I were blessed to be able to be present in the delivery room!! Melissa was an incredible trooper!! Caleb's heartrate would start going down at times, so Melissa had to breathe into an oxygen mask. They even had her sit out for a few of the contractions until he he had a stable heartrate. It was thrilling to see him as he made his first appearance into this world on 1-11-11 at 7:14 a.m. and hear those first baby cries!! Of course, it made me cry, too! It was also special hearing the lullaby over the intercom announcing his birth! After a little mommy/baby bonding they took him for the usual baby checks. He weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and was 20.5 inches long. He got an impressive 9 for his Apgar score! Caleb is absolutely adorable and precious!!

Besides Kyle, Gayle, and me, some of his first visitors were the rest of the Hancocks, Ryan, Alyssa, and Kai, Great-Grandma Twogee and Great-Gramps, the Smiths, Nielsens, and Melissa Blair.

There was even snow that fell in the evening of Caleb's birth. Very appropriate as his mom arrived during a big snowstorm!

The only unfortunate circumstance was that Dave had to do an emergency job at work and was unable to be present for his birth. This was ironic since Dave mentioned awhile back that at least with this new job he knew for sure that he would not be traveling when Caleb arrived! His boss felt terrible and was extremely grateful for Dave. Thankfully, when Dave was doing a delivery run to Valley Medical Center late last night, he was able to pop in and meet his new grandson.

We are so blessed by God with this new arrival! What fun Caleb and Kai will have!
