Woo Hoo!
Admittedly, I haven't been a very good blogger these past several months, but the news we received on Wednesday, is definitely something worth posting! Caleb went in for his first EUA (exam under anesthesia) since his 5 weeks of radiation ended 3 weeks ago. This was the exam that would show whether the radiation had done its job. A few weeks ago, Dave and I went with Kyle and Melissa to one of Caleb's radiation appointments at the University of Washington Medical Center. After Caleb woke up from his radiation, his radiation oncology doctor, Dr. Ermoian, came in to talk to Kyle and Melissa. He said normally he checks patients' x-rays on a weekly basis, but with Caleb's he was monitoring them on a daily basis. He was pleased that the x-rays showed the radiation beams hitting the spots right where they should, and although he couldn't tell from the x-rays, he was optimistic about what the results would show. It was so encouraging to hear this, but even so, we were all guardedly cautious going to Caleb's EUA on Wednesday. Dave, Wayne, Gayle, and I joined Kyle, Melissa, and Caleb at Children's Hospital. Just walking into the hospital gave me knots in my stomach as the last two times we had been there, the news hadn't been what we were hoping to hear. It just brought back those thoughts and memories. Thankfully, Caleb was able to get in relatively quickly and we all sat in the waiting room biding time until the pager went off. They said it would take about an hour, and after about 40 or so minutes, the loud beep of the pager went off, calling Kyle and Melissa into the "dreaded room" to meet with Dr. Weiss. We all prayed that we would hear the news we have been longing to hear for the past 10 months - that Caleb's tumors were gone. When Kyle and Melissa came out of the room, their thumbs were up and happy, relieved tears started streaming down all six of our faces. What joy!! We are all so thankful to our Lord for guiding the medical team's hands throughout the process and for giving us the miracle we were longing and pleading for. We met up with Ryan, Alyssa, and Kai for a celebratory lunch at Spud's Fish and Chips. The next day (Thursday), Kyle and Melissa met with Dr. Pendergrass, Caleb's oncologist, and he confirmed the good news. He mentioned that sometimes when they look at the pictures, they will see some bumps behind the tissues, indicating possible new tumors, but they didn't see any in Caleb's pictures - praise the Lord again! If all looks good at his EUA in a couple of months, they will take his port out. We have been so blessed with family and friends (and even people we don't know!) who have bathed our little peanut in prayer! We can't thank everyone enough!!!
