Welcome to the World, Kai David Ness!!

Little did I know when I wrote my previous post on Tuesday night that 2 hours later Ryan would call me with the news that Alyssa's water broke. They were going to be heading to Valley Medical Center and would call me when they arrived. About 11:30 p.m. I was on my way to the hospital (Dave was up in Bellingham for work when he got the call). Halfway to Renton, Ryan called and said Alyssa wasn't really having any contractions, so she was going to try to sleep. I spent the night at Kyle and Melissa's and had a restless night of sleep half waiting for the phone to ring to head to the hospital. Thankfully, Valley Medical is just down the road from their place. Dave arrived at the hospital from Bellingham about 7:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, followed about an hour later by Melissa and me. We met Ryan and Dave in the cafeteria for breakfast. Throughout the day we played the waiting game as Ryan came out with updates on how she was progressing. Alyssa had an epidural and some pitocin about noon. We visited with her for awhile in the afternoon and she was doing great!

About 5:30 p.m., Ryan came to the waiting room to say she was at 10 cm., but because the baby was in an unusual position, it could be another hour to an hour and a half. I called my parents and they came to the hospital. When a baby is born they play a lullaby over the loud speaker. We heard one about 6:00, but when Ryan didn't show up after an hour or so, we figured it wasn't him! About 7:30 we heard another lullaby followed very shortly thereafter with a 2nd one. We decided that certainly one of those two had to be the signal of Kai's birth! We kept our eyes peeled to the door to the birthing center and every time it opened we kept hoping it was going to be Ryan. Finally, around 8:30, Ryan came out with the announcement that Kai David made his appearance at 7:34 p.m. (the 2nd of the 2 lullabies!)!!

Melissa, Mom, and I were able to go in to visit first since Alyssa was feeding him. I had tears when I saw Kai for the first time! It was one of the best moments of my whole life!! He was absolutely adorable!! Even the nurse said that nurses don't tell parents their babies are beautiful unless they truly are and she said Kai is a beautiful baby! Not only that, he got a perfect 10 for his Apgar score. The nurse said in 20 years she's only seen about 3 perfect scores! Okay, my grandma boasting will stop now! He has blondish-brown hair and blue eyes (for now - we'll see if they'll stay that color). When we were in the room, we saw him get weighed and he came in at 5 lbs. 15 oz., 18 in. long. Kai was 15 days early!

After a bit, the men were able to come in - Dave, Dad, and Kyle (who got off a little early from work). Baby Kai was passed around to be admired and cooed at and lots of pictures were taken!

We are so blessed by the Lord to add this precious little one into our family!! He is loved so incredibly much!!!
